Summary:
American exceptionalism is built on its hard power and liberal democracy values; supporting Taiwan against Chinese hostility is a test of it. However, Trump's transactional approach to foreign policy undermines the US's greatness, especially in the midst of a geopolitical competition with China and increasing ignorance of Taiwan's security.
- Taiwan is crucial for both China and the US for economic and security reasons. However, Taiwan is more ideologically compatible and strategically valuable for the US, making it more significant for the US to test its exceptionalism.
- Taiwan's technology sector, particularly its advanced-node semiconductor and other high-technology products, is vital to the US economy. Despite efforts to diversify the semiconductor supply chain, Taiwan will remain critical because domestic regulations require its firms to stay at least one generation ahead. If China invades the island, it will cause a global economic catastrophe worse than the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Given the importance of Taiwan to the US economy, the US must retain its physical security presence in the Indo-Pacific region, especially in the first island chain, to sustain its economic ties with Taiwan.
- The US itself must have reliable military capabilities and credible integrity to form sturdy alliances and partnerships. Former US administrations have demonstrated a commitment to Taiwan's security by selling arms to Taiwan, fostering stronger security agreements with Indo-Pacific partners, and maintaining some forward presence in the Western Pacific.
- If the current administration continues to focus on its economic interests while ignoring the overall strategic interests, other countries will lose faith in the US power. Furthermore, US adversaries will exploit its weaknesses to establish regional dominance or further undermine its power. Therefore, the US should protect Taiwan's self-governance to prove that American exceptionalism has not died.
